Harlem River Drive – Harlem River Drive (Roulette – SVR. 56046 - France 1971)
€180.00 / Sold Out
In 1971, pianist, composer and bandleader Eddie Palmieri put out a formative album called Harlem River Drive. Written in the heat of racial turbulence, its lyrics addressed the inequality Puerto Ricans faced in New York City. The album served as a form of protest, as well as commentary on social-justice issues for the people of El Barrio, East Harlem.
Though the Latin funk classic didn't take off in the early '70s, it later became an underground classic. Its enduring songs remain relevant today.
Recorded towards the end of the Latin soul era, it features a wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk. Palmieri worked with an incredibly talented crew of Latin and R&B session musicians to create this quintessential Nuyorican Vibe. Contributors include Victor Venegas from Mongo Santamaria's band, Palmieri's brother Charlie, Bruce Fowler, Dick Meza as well as Andy Gonzale. Also appearing Randy Brecker and one of the all-time greatest of the greats Bernard Purdie.
